Antibiotics work only against bacteria, not viruses like colds or flu. Before starting any course, confirm the bug is bacterial and that you have no recorded allergy. Take the first dose as soon as possible, then follow the exact schedule—usually every 6, 8, or 12 hours—until the last tablet is gone. Stopping early, even when you feel better, leaves the toughest bacteria alive to multiply, a process that drives antibiotic resistance in Botswana and worldwide. If you miss a dose, swallow it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next one—never double up
Key tip: Combine every antibiotic dose with a full glass of water and, unless told otherwise, a small snack; this reduces stomach upset and improves absorption.
Most oral antibiotics—amoxicillin capsules, doxycycline tablets, azithromycin suspensions—are designed for 15 °C – 25 °C. Refrigeration can cause moisture to condense inside blister packs or bottles, degrading the active ingredient. Keep them in a cool, dry cupboard away from direct sunlight and steam. The exceptions are a few re-constituted, paediatric liquid antibiotics that your pharmacist will label “Refrigerate”; these must stay between 2 °C and 8 °C and be discarded after 7–14 days.
