Choosing the Right Cough Remedy

Coughs fall into two camps: dry, tickly throats that benefit from dextromethorphan or menthol lozenges, and wet, chesty coughs that need an expectorant such as guaifenesin to thin mucus. Combination syrups may add a decongestant or antihistamine; always check the active-ingredient panel to avoid doubling up with separate cold tablets. Children under six should receive paediatric glycerine linctus or honey-based formulas only—never adult codeine or alcohol-containing syrups.

Dosing Safety and When to Seek Care

Measure liquid medicines with the supplied cup or syringe, not a kitchen spoon, and space doses at least four hours apart. Stop the syrup after seven days; if the cough persists, produces blood-streaked sputum, or is paired with fever and shortness of breath, consult a doctor immediately. Asthmatics and pregnant patients should confirm suitability with our pharmacist, and all unused or expired cough remedies can be returned to Phase 4 Pharmacy’s green disposal bin for safe incineration.
